IDrive
I use several different computers and I don’t always remember to take my thumb drive with me, so a lot of the time I use a free hosting service and email myself things, like the story I’m working on, or the photos I wanted to take to work, or utilities I need to work on Mim’s computer or Dai Fu’s computer.
Nice, but what do you do if you lose the email with the link, or if the hosting site only keeps files for a week or two?
You look for a more permanent solution.
I know the idea of online backup can seem a little dodgy. You worry that the site will vanish and then where will you be? IDrive.com offers 2 gigs of storage for free, and unlimited storage for under five dollars (US) a month.
The interface is set up in a way that even novice computer users will be comfortable with it. You can just drag and drop your files to and from the site and let the computer do the rest. It also supports versioning, so if you need to revert back to an earlier draft of something, it’s available. Much nicer than suddenly realising you’ve just edited your only copy of something and accidentally deleted a huge chunk of it… after you’ve uploaded it off-site.
Off-site storage is a good thing. If anything happens to your home computer, a copy of your important things (photos, documents, etc) is kept securely, waiting for you. IDrive encrypts your files and as long as you remember not to give your password to others, no one else will be able to access your stuff.
IDrive. For you online backup needs.
