6 boys, 3 girls charged in attack on bus
Woman was seriously hurt, man was also attacked, police say.
Nine teenagers riding a city bus after school yesterday attacked and seriously injured a woman after they tried to prevent her from finding a seat on the No. 27 bus as it traveled near Union Memorial Hospital, according to a city police report.
The bus driver radioed for emergency assistance, and Maryland Transit Administration police, who are responsible for security on the state-operated bus lines, responded and arrested six boys and three girls. In the attack, two seats and a rear glass door were damaged.
The juveniles ranged in age from 14 to 15 years old, and were riding the bus after finishing classes for the day at Robert Poole Middle School in Hampden, according to an MTA spokeswoman.

Police said the incident occurred about 3 p.m. after Sarah Kreager, 26, and Troy Ennis, 30, boarded the bus. The report says that each time Kreager tried to sit in an empty seat, a boy would jump into the seat and say that they were reserved.
After she finally claimed a seat, Kreager “was immediately attacked by several juveniles,” the report says, adding that the teenagers dragged the victim off the bus after it stopped in the 300 block of E. 33rd St. and then assaulted Ennis after he tried to intervene.
Kreager, 26, suffered deep cuts to her head and neck and two broken bones in her left eye socket, the police report says. She was being treated at an unspecified hospital. Ennis was not seriously injured.
All nine teenagers were charged as juveniles with aggravated assault and destruction of property. It was not immediately clear today if the suspects remained in custody at the juvenile detention center or if they had been released to their parents.
Wicker, the MTA spokeswoman, said police were continuing their investigation into the incident.
I don’t care how young they are. I think they should be tried as adults. What a completely stupid, pointless, hateful thing to do.

I agree. They are too old for middle school and certainly old enough to do serious damage. If they can pick on a young woman what harm could they do to an older or weaker or younger person? Seat-keep-away is stupid and pointless but to drag her off the bus and assault her is what I’d call attempted murder.

Yeah, I agree. I also know that some piece of S lawyer will play on the sympathy of the court to get these little wastes of DNA less punishment than they deserve.
You can only hope that they try this with someone who is able to defend themselves against a group (think ex-military special forces) and they get exactly what they deserve.
Sick sick sick.

And nary a single picture of snow? The region gets its first snow of winter 2007. It takes me 2 hours, 20 minutes, to get home yesterday. It took Vicky 3 hours, 10 minutes to get from Sterling to Falls Church yesterday. The only reason I’m at work now is I left home at 4:45AM and got to work at 6AM, thus beating the legions of stupid drivers and Metro commuters. :)
So where’s the snow up in the “Frozen Northern Wastelands of Baltimore?” :D That’s what we’d (”I’d”) like to see.
…
But seriously… the MTA is scaring me. A couple of our Informix DBAs commute from Baltimore and Towson to DC each day via the MTA and Light Rail. We all knew where E. Fayette Street was and what route that was when the guy got stabbed. Your blog today makes us none more comfortable.
WMATA had 721,160 riders yesterday on Metrorail. 468,729 rode Metrobus. (source: WMATA) The stuff you describe happens on Metrobus. There was a shooting on 3rd St (2 blocks from my office on 1st and Columbus Circle) two weeks ago. I left work at 7pm that night, the shooting was at 10. I missed it by *that* much :P …that and I was walking the opposite direction (to Union Station).
Public Transportation is scary, hon. It’s the great equalizer: businessmen in suits drawing six figures, homeless with a SmarTrip card, and people looking for an easy mark. There’s a reason why I don’t ride the 950 with my Nokia N810 in the open or on me as I walk NE to either Mercadito near my office, or ride the Red line late at night (or early morning) with anything of value in sight.

NOTE: Sorry about that, I forgot to close the Anchor tag on my (source: WMATA). You might want to fix the /a tag. sorry. :P
