19 Days Until My Birthday

The home computer is dead again. Despite the repairs that Daffydd did. Now it’s failing to recognise the keyboard. Before it got to that point, though, it would start to open a program (or a file) and the screen would just go grey (the desktop colour - no icons, no menu bar, no response). Restarting the computer resulted in the “Keyboard not found” thing. It’s a new keyboard. I checked the connection. It worked before I restarted.

Conclusion: computer is dead. I was thinking about getting another notebook and then Kitti and I could both be totally portable, but if I get another tower I can put the new hard drive in the new computer. I could even move the DVD/CD drive over, since it’s fairly new.

Is anyone selling computers that DON’T come with Vista? Or should I just suck it up, get Vista, and then reinstall Windows XP?

Daffyd, Ken, Ken, Rob… I’m looking at all y’all first.

(Yes. I know. Windows = evil.)

HP was, until recently, offering some laptops with XP Pro instead of Vista, but all of the desktops I’ve seen come with Vista Home.

If you want a PC w/o the latest Microsoft crap-bomb, you will need to build it yourself, or buy a Vista-addled unit and reinstall the OS. Either way, you’re running an XP install. Then, you can thank your lucky stars that you’ve got a good high-speed connection to load all of the outstanding patches.

Personally, I’d recommend finding a good deal on a HPaq Pavilion/Presario at a decent price. HP’s building boxes with standard components these days - Mboards from known manufacturers (Asus and the like), and a minimum of odd cruft. Wipe the HDD and install OS of choice, and you’re good to go.

Vista is indeed a steaming pile. What was the final outcome?
