Good News Disguised As Bad News

May 23, 2008

Meredith the Prius is a total. I will not be getting my car back.

I’m heartbroken, but on the bright side, this means I can buy a new car and get rid of the rental car. This will make me much happier in the long run.

The good news is that the value of the car now is essentially the value of the car. They’re deducting some from the value based on mileage, but the mileage wasn’t that high to begin with, so it’s not a huge loss. So the car should be paid off and I should actually get money back for this.

I’m also getting the money paid to Enterprise for the “damage” back because my insurance policy actually has rental car coverage built into it.

  2. I think I feel better knowing you will be driving a new car and not a “good as new” car. This time you can get the all-black and if you give up some of the add-ons like paint protection and such you might come out ahead. How soon can ya do it?

  3. Ms. DA & friends:
There’s some very cool on the horizon that you, Dave et alia would probably salivate and sell a child (or two) over. I’m under NDA to two companies beta-testing devices that are being released now and later this year. Both involve geolocation (knowing your GPS location at all times) and wireless internet (WiMax). The two companies aren’t under direct competition to each other (different market segments), but 3 other companies are planning to integrate the tech into cars (2010 Prius) and handhelds.

A “sanitized” version of one review I wrote was posted to:
    http://www.latheofdreams.com/?p=12
A “dirty/explicit” version with technical specifics was sent to the company and developer forums.

I was going to have some interesting news on July 9th about the 2 devices, but now it looks like it’ll be October 15th before I’m do a fully-public review of both.

I’m really looking forward to the WiMax rollout. I have internet everywhere now at 384Kbit/sec using AT&T EDGE, but 2-30Mbit/sec using WiMax means I can finally dump my Verizon and AT&T accounts, my phone & internet will be WiMax (VOIP over WiMax, WiMax Data). Unfortunately, this means I’ll never be able to leave “civilization” (aka Washington, DC, and northern VA) until WiMax goes US-wide.

  5. Don’t worry DA, Meredeth will live on as parts in other Prius’ (uuurgh, I can never remember the easy way to plural a word ending in s). I’m with Mim, tweak the requirements and get the things you need, rather than the things you don’t.

Don’t suppose this changes your ability to make it to the shin-dig?

Ken, I’m a techno-junkie, but I’m also someone that doesn’t drop their tech until it dies. Still got me one of those ginormous Garmin units, and will be hacking it if I can’t sell it. April has the new unit that’s about the size of a post-it pack.

But I’m a guy, what’s with this direction crap anyhoo?
