A Change In Internet Service (XOHM)
October 5, 2008
Cavalier telephone is the best thing I’ve ever had, and for years the DSL has been good, but over the past few weeks the connection has been worse and worse. A subtle attempt to get me to upgrade to C2? A plot by Verizon to get me to switch back so I can get FiOS? Is Comcast cable out there squeezing the wire to slow down my bits to a trickle?
I don’t know. Right now, I don’t care. Tomorrow I should be getting my order from XOHM: a new modem and a card for the laptop.
For the same price as Cavalier’s service I will be able to take the notebook anywhere in Baltimore City and parts of Baltimore County (like the place where I work and where science fiction conventions often are, and the place where some of my friends live). I will have a connection and it won’t cost me anything extra. I will also be getting home internet service.
Watch this website for updates about the service.

Have you had a chance to try it yet? How is it? What part of the city have you tried it?

I’m using the in-house modem in Greektown, right across from Bayview Hospital. I’m still having trouble with the notebook card, though. There’s no signal at all in the house, and a weak, intermittent one in the yard. I really need to go somewhere else and try it, but I haven’t had the time. I think the hospital might actually be blocking/interfering with the laptop’s signal.
