I was actually going to try to not talk about the iPad.

I was actually going to try to not talk about the iPad. - Thursday, January 28th, 2010

I admit (iAdmit?) that my initial reaction was “OMG WANT” but that’s just my initial reaction to any new and shiny toy. The more I thought about it and the more I read about it there are too many flaws. Too much that makes it a shiny thing and not enough that makes it something useful.

While I realize there’s a keyboard available, that decreases the portability factor. Which means to use it to type you’d have to have it on a flat surface and be staring directly down on it — bad for your neck — or have it propped at an angle, which would be bad for your wrists.

I also can’t imagine trying to watch a movie on it. I know how hard it is to see my phone or my notebook screen if the lighting is weird, which would mean constantly having to shift around to get a good view. Or you’d have to prop it up against something. I have a feeling I’d need to prop it up against something just to be able to see it. My eyes are actually pretty good (despite the need for glasses) and I think I’d go mental trying to watch anything on it — it’d be too close. And again, not really very portable.

What it lacks, too, is pretty significant. The second generation will probably have things like a USB port and a camera (and Flash support) because the lack of those things are pretty widely reported.

Honestly, for the price, I think I’d rather just get a netbook, or even another notebook — at least with a notebook I’d have a DVD drive and could watch movies and listen to music that was on disc instead of selling my soul to the iTunes store.

Let’s not even go into the really bad name. I think everything that can be said about it has already been said, so keep your menstrual jokes out of the comments.

The name makes me think of someone with a thick Boston accent.

Same here. “I left ma iPad in the cah. Almost had a hat attack when I thought I lost it.”
