Books N Stuph

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

When not wandering around shouting “Cardiff, no” I’ve been knitting. Working on a scarf and hat to go with my greatcoat, and an afghan, that is going to take for-freaking-ever and require a hell of a lot more yarn than I anticipated because things like basic math are beyond my comprehension.

(note to self: buy more yarn.)

I’ve also been reading.

Atheist Universe by David Mills. The book does not attack religion, but explains in a very calm, organized, logical way what makes an atheist and where the differences are in scientific and religious reasoning. It’s a very easy read, too.

The Grouchy Grammarian (47 Most Common Mistakes in English Made by Journalists, Broadcasters, and Others Who Should Know Better) starts off great. The “introduction” reads almost like a House and Wilson conversation (or maybe Fry and Laurie), and had me laughing out loud. The chapters get quickly tedious, though. It’s got some explanation of the common mistakes being outlined (such as, how the confusion could have come about), but I think the point could be made much quicker. Still, it’s a good book. Worth it if you’re a grammar nitpicker, or just wondered why some things are the way they are.

Now I’ve got to go to the laundromat, because it’s been cold and raining and there’s a lot of washing that needs to be done.

(Yes, Mim, you get both books when I’m done with them.)

Before Mim left today she said “Do something funny online”.

The closest I could come up with is this.

werewolf_lib: No snow yet, and I am deeply unsatisfied by this. It’s time to undertake a task I’ve put off since the move — the shelving and categorizing of my cookbooks, plus a complete recount which I estimate will be at or over 900. If you never hear from me again, you can probably guess what happened to me!

ETA: New Jersey is missing. All of it but one lone cookbook. Also, some of Italy can’t be located. How often do you hear someone say they’ve misplaced Italy and New Jersey?

Depends. Are we in the Doctor Who/Torchwood universe? Or maybe Douglas Adams? Because then? A lot.

: That’s what I sound like — not a crazy person, a Time Lady! Earlier I was asking the cat if she knew where Maryland had gone. She didn’t. Maryland was eventually recovered under a stack of fiction.

theninth: Well that’s where I’d keep it.

ebook Readers

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

I’m an avid reader. Kitti is always “mentioning” that we have too many books and not enough shelves. I also hate having to lug around a huge bag just so I can have a book (or books) that I’m reading handy.

Does anyone make a really good ebook reader? I found one that wasn’t terribly expensive, was capable of holding about 200 books with a 128 meg memory card, but it doesn’t support PDF format. The Sony one is higher in price, but I can’t find anything that says if it’s okay with ebooks not purchased from Sony’s CONNECT (I like to get stuff from Project Guttenberg).

I have a Sony MP3 player, and it’s okay with non-secure mp3 files that I transfer myself, but you can never tell, you know? All the FAQ and tutorial stuff seems to focusing on putting pictures on the ebook.

I used to use the Treo for reading, but the screen is way too small and it really kills the battery to read a book on it. The small screen size was the biggest problem, though. One screen of text would load and I’d already be ready to move on to the next page. I was hitting the down button about every 30-45 seconds.

I just want something that’s about book-size. I don’t need bells, whistles, mp3 capabilities, and all that nonsense. I just want to be able to carry a lot of books around with me all the time and actually be able to read them.

Harry Potter and the AIM Service

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Mim got Deathy Hallows yesterday and stayed up past her bedtime to finish it. I’ll be getting it from her later today and alienating Kitti when I refuse to do anything other than read it.

In an unrelated story, I’ve decided to start using AIM more often. My name’s jimmythelox, so why not send me a message and say hey. Introduce yourself though. Even if I know you, I might not recognise your screen name.

I has a cool mom.

I got home from work yesterday and tripped over two large, heavy boxes from Amazon. Kitti gave me that look that says “What have you bought now” so before I even said hello I said “I don’t remember ordering anything.”

So I opened the boxes (like ya do) and inside each one was one book. As in two different books, one in each box. Not one book in two boxes. Both by photographer Annie Leibovitz. A Photographer’s Life: 1990-2005 and Women.

I’d just recently seen the photo she took of the queen and mentioned to Mim how much I loved her stuff. So Mim ordered me two whole books.

Hey, Mim? I also love dogs! :D
